I thought that I felt as well as I could so accepted my ailments as 'just me'. I'd learned to live with hair too thin, red patches on my face, canker sores, and brittle nails.
A decade later, not only do I feel younger but my hair is thicker, the red patches on my face are gone, my nails aren't brittle, and I'm canker sore free. Best of all, no one guesses my age!
I was given multiple prescriptions to 'treat' lupus like many others who are diagnosed with autoimmune disorder. Each came with undesirable, toxic side effects. I knew that this was NOT the path for me. I needed to find out why I had an auto-immune disorder and what I could do to reverse it. Little did I know I was on my own. Health coaches were virtually unknown at that time, and it was up to me to find the answers to my questions.
Every answer I found pointed to diet and lifestyle.
My body was constantly being invaded by chemicals in processed foods, toxins in the environment, stress and infections. I was astonished to learn how much distress my diet and lifestyle caused - I already thought that I was eating well and taking care of myself! I learned that I could take charge of my own health again by making many small changes that added up to a big change in my health.
I was able to wean off my medications by changing to a predominantly organic, plant-based diet. I was medication free within months! Even though I thought I felt well before I got sick, making changes in my diet and lifestyle made me feel better than I had in years.
Feeling younger, stronger and healthier than I had in years was all the motivation I needed to maintain my new found lifestyle. Once I learned how my daily choices impacted my health, the benefits dwarfed the inconvenience and effort. I was amazed at how quickly new practices became routine. It takes commitment - which isn't always easy - but it's worth feeling the best I can everyday.
I now know that my lifestyle choices are also increasing my chances of continuing to live a disease-free life. I'm not just focused on increasing my lifespan but ensuring that my healthspan is as long and robust as it can be.
